Klaus Benesch, Hauslage-StiftungThere are many reasons for the rapid loss of prestige of book culture and the humanities. No one knows what the future of reading will actually hold. Nevertheless, some answers can be extrapolated from developments since the turn of the millennium. In order to allow a broad spectrum of different positions to be heard, Klaus Benesch takes a look at the topic not only from the perspective of reading research and literary studies. Asking questions about the changing role of reading and the humanities in the information age also calls for broadening the perspective into the realm of social and science policy. New self-images of the humanities are needed that open up the cultural technique of reading in a new, contemporary and sustainable way in the age of digitalisation.
